These words spoken by Habakkuk express the heart cry of God's servant. Frederick Tatford refers to him as, "The Prophet of the Watch Tower." (see 2:1) Evidently he had received a disturbing message from the Lord. It was the predicted approach of the armies of Nebuchadnezzar and the ensuing captivity in Babylon which distressed the servant of God. What is the need of the church today? Surely it is for people of the watch tower vigil. These are the ones who are listening and watching in their God appointed place. They hear and take to heart the message of the Lord. God says, "To this man will I look . . to him that trembleth at my word." Too many Christians are unmoved by the word of God, and undisturbed in the face of impending judgement. Nothing seems to arrest us any more. Why this slumber of soul in these awesome days? What was Habakkuk's great desire? Here are his words: "Oh Lord revive thy work in the midst of the years." The people were in their present predicament through their spiritual negligence. They couldn't see the danger, nor could they feel their need. How relevant this is to so many lives. There is no heart cry for revival as a matter of urgency. There is no burden for an awakening out of a sense of shame that we are so tepid in heart. Consequently the "Oh" of passion and tears of brokenness are virtually gone out of our souls. It is in just such a state that we should set our hearts to pray for revival. Charles G Finney said, "A revival is the result of the right use of the appropriate means. I fully believe that, could facts be known, it would be found that when the appointed means have been rightly used, spiritual blessings have been obtained with greater uniformity than temporal ones." If we will submit our lives to the authority of God's Word; if we will humble ourselves before the throne of grace; if we will permit the blood of Jesus and the Spirit of God to cleanse and fill our hearts; if we will engage in earnest and honest intercession before God we will experience personal revival. This can precede and produce a corporate revival in the work of the Lord. Is the work of the kingdom in need of revival? Yes! It is. We are witnessing spiritual declension on every hand. Our need is great and a revival is a matter of urgency. Will you unite with God's people imploring the reviving of the Lord in His work and in your life?
Create soul thirst for Thee And hungering for the bread of life Oh may our spirits be.
