How to become a Christian.
A true Christian is a person who trusts in the Lord Jesus Christ to be saved from the guilt and
the power of sin - and is surrendered to Him as his Lord and Master - and confesses Him as such
before other people.
There are a few simple steps in coming to know the Lord Jesus Christ as your Saviour -
1. Come to Him in repentance, confessing your sin to God.
The Bible says that if you confess your sin to God He will forgive you. You will find this
written in 1 John ch.1 v. 9. Everyone needs this forgiveness because all have sinned and broken
God's Holy law (Romans 3:23).
You also need to turn from your sin and determine in your heart to live a life pleasing to God.
The Bible calls this repentance. It says, "Repent and be converted that your sins may be blotted
out." (Acts 3:19)
2. Trust Him to forgive your sins.
When the Lord Jesus Christ died on the cross, He paid the price to take away your sins. The Bible
says "Christ died for our sins." (1 Corinthians 15:3)
This means that He suffered in your place. He was your substitute. When you accept the price He
paid in dying for you, God will forgive you on His account.
Jesus says, "I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No man cometh unto the Father but by Me."
3. Trust the Lord Jesus Christ to be your Saviour and receive Him in simple faith.
To trust the Lord means to take Him at His word. Here is a promise: "As many as received Him, to
them gave He power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name." (John 1:12)
In the last book of the Bible, Revelation 3:20, you will read these words, "Behold I stand at
the door and knock; if any man hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to him."
When you accept Jesus Christ as your Saviour, He will give you everlasting life. One of the most
familiar verses in the Bible, John 3:16, declares this.
4. You can come to Him now. Here is a simple prayer to help you.
Dear God,
I know that I am a sinner. I cannot save myself. I thank you, Lord Jesus, for dying for me on
the cross. I am willing to turn away from everything that is wrong in my life. I repent now. I
trust your precious blood to wash away my sins. I accept your forgiveness now. I receive you
into my heart as my Saviour. I thank you for hearing my prayer and I will live for you from
this day onward.
Amen.
5. The next step is to confess to someone that you are now a Christian - that the Lord Jesus
Christ is your Saviour, and that you are going to serve Him.
Ask some true Christian to pray with you, and help you with any problems you may have. Take
time to read the Bible each day, beginning with the New Testament Gospels.
Commence each day with a prayer, thanking God for saving you. Ask Him to help you to live for
Him. Go to a church where you will meet other Christians, and find friendship and help in your
new life.
